Therisks,toldhonestly.
Volatility & market risk
Crypto-asset prices can move sharply within minutes. Even "stablecoins" may depeg from their target value due to issuer, reserve, or market conditions. Past stability is not a guarantee of future stability.
Irreversibility of on-chain transactions
Blockchain transactions are generally final once confirmed. Sending to a wrong address, an incompatible chain, or a contract that cannot return funds typically results in permanent loss. Always double-check addresses, network selection, and amounts.
Self-custody & wallet security
- You are solely responsible for your seed phrase and private keys.
- Anyone with your seed phrase can drain your wallet — MettaPay cannot recover it.
- Never share your seed phrase. MettaPay support will never ask for it.
- Beware of phishing sites, fake wallet popups, and malicious browser extensions.
Smart-contract & protocol risk
Escrow, swaps, and on-chain interactions rely on smart contracts that may contain bugs, be exploited, be paused, or behave unexpectedly. Audits reduce but do not eliminate this risk.
Network & infrastructure risk
Blockchain networks may suffer congestion, reorgs, or downtime. RPC providers, chain-analytics vendors, and other third parties may be temporarily unavailable. Transactions may be delayed, fail, or require higher gas to confirm.
No deposit insurance
Crypto assets held in self-custody wallets or in on-chain escrow are not insured by the FDIC, SIPC, or any government deposit-insurance scheme.
Regulatory risk
Crypto regulation is evolving. New laws, enforcement actions, or court decisions in your jurisdiction may affect availability of services, your tax treatment, or the legality of certain transactions.
Counterparty & escrow risk
Escrow reduces but does not eliminate counterparty risk. Goods or services purchased may not match descriptions; arbitration involves human judgment of imperfect evidence. Decisions by MettaPay arbitrators are binding at the platform level — off-platform legal remedies may exist but can be costly.
Fraud, scams & social engineering
- Verify counterparties before sending. Use MettaTags and trust signals.
- Be skeptical of "too good to be true" offers, urgency tactics, and unsolicited DMs.
- Confirm wallet-connect prompts carefully — read every transaction before signing.
Tax
You are responsible for determining and paying any taxes on your transactions. MettaPay does not provide tax advice.
